How Does Hair Grow?
Whether we are born with a smooth, shiny head, or a head of hair like Elvis, we are born with approximately 100,000 hair follicles. As we age, we naturally shed about 60 hairs a day, but the hair follicles remain. While it is a common misconception that hair shedding is the cause of hair loss, the hair-shedding follicles still remain active, meaning that another hair has the potential to regrow.
Hair growth is an ongoing three-phase process including anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. The anagen phase is the growing phase of hair, lasting anywhere between 2-8 years. The catagen phase is the phase in which some unknown signal causes the hair bulb at the base of the follicle to detach from the scalp. The telogen phase is the final stage of the hair cycle. Once this final stage occurs, the regrowth process starts over.
Why Do We Lose Hair?
Over time, hair follicles can become less active or they can become inactive altogether, leading to visible thinning and baldness.
