Hair Regeneration Treatment Overview
Hair Regeneration, a non-surgical alternative to hair transplantation, is offered at Hogue Cosmetic Surgery/Minnesota Regenerative Medicine for women and men suffering from hair loss, hair thinning, hair miniaturization and early balding.
Dr. Hogue, a cosmetic surgeon and regenerative medicine specialist, uses a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and extracellular matrix (ACell®) to regenerate the scalp skin and tissue, to reactivate existing hair follicles, and to revitalize the normal hair growth cycle. PRP with ACell® serves to potentially reverse, and slow the progression of hair loss, hair thinning, hair miniaturization, and early balding. The level or degree of response to a single PRP with ACell® treatment cannot be predicted or known in advance of treatment. Results vary depending on the hair loss causation and the individual’s regenerative healing capacity. Visible results may be seen within 2 to 6 months after a single hair regeneration treatment using PRP with ACell®.
Before & After Photos
The process of collecting PRP first involves obtaining whole blood from a patient. The recommended amount of whole blood depends on the amount or extent of scalp area that needs to be treated. The option of either a single volume of 180-mL, or a double volume of 360-mL of whole blood is drawn from the patient’s arm vein, depending on the extent of scalp hair loss. If hair loss is restricted to the top of the head, crown, front and temple areas, then a single volume of blood is usually sufficient. If the entire scalp exhibits hair loss or thinning, then a double volume of blood is usually recommended. The whole blood is placed into our Angel® Whole Blood Separation System, spun down to isolate platelet-rich plasma (PRP). From the original 180-mL to 360-mL of blood, approximately 20-mL to 40-mL of PRP is obtained for use during the hair regeneration treatment. This 180-mL or 360-mL whole blood amount drawn for a single PRP hair regeneration treatment is 3 to 12 times more than what most hair regenerative specialists routinely draw during a treatment. This is why we routinely perform only one initial treatment, whereas other hair regeneration specialists recommend multiple treatments performed at monthly intervals.
PRP contains a highly enriched number of platelet cells that promote the body’s natural healing process by releasing powerful growth factors, cytokines, proteins, and peptides to collectively stimulate skin and tissue regeneration.
ACell® is a porcine-derived FDA-cleared wound healing material known as extracellular matrix (ECM) that comes as a sterile powder. ECM attracts adult stem cells and promotes an increased blood supply to the area. When used in treating hair loss, hair thinning, hair miniaturization, and early balding, ECM appears to restore the necessary cellular conditions responsible for healthy hair growth. Dr. Hogue administers an infiltrative local anesthetic “ring block” to completely numb the scalp treatment area for a painless experience during the hair regeneration treatment. The patient’s autologous or self-derived PRP is mixed together with ACell® into a solution that is then directly injected into the scalp to promote cellular regeneration and hair growth.
Since PRP is harvested from your own blood, there is minimal to no risk of an adverse reaction; ACell® is a sterile, non-cellular FDA-cleared biologic agent (used Off-Label for Hair Regeneration). The PRP with ACell® treatment is a way to give your body a chance to naturally reverse the hair loss and hair thinning process.
A hair regeneration treatment using PRP with ACell® involves micro injections, local anesthesia, and a blood draw without any incisions or scars. The treatment takes 90-120 minutes to perform, and is done in a private, office-based setting. No special wound care is needed.
No Down Time:
Following a hair regeneration treatment, your scalp will be rinsed in our procedure room and you will go home looking essentially the same as you did prior to the procedure. There will be no bleeding or down time due to the rapid healing effects of PRP with ACell®. Mild tissue swelling from the local anesthetic scalp ring block affecting the forehead and upper face area, along with the potential for bruising may occur.
A good candidate for a hair regeneration treatment using PRP with ACell® includes the following:
- Someone that prefers a less invasive, more natural treatment method to prevent ongoing and future hair loss, as well as hair growth and thickening of miniaturized and thinning hairs.
- Someone with genetic pattern hair loss (female or male pattern baldness) in the early stages of hair loss or balding, or anytime there is an abundance of miniaturized or thinning hairs on the scalp.
Our cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Hogue, consults with each patient to customize a treatment plan specific to their needs, wants, and desired treatment results.
