What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is a common condition affecting the skin of the arms, thighs, buttocks, and other areas in more than 85% of women. It is caused by shortened fibrous attachments to uneven fat deposits and thinned skin resulting in the appearance of bulging, lumpy, dimpled skin, often resembling “cottage cheese”. While many temporary treatments have been promoted for cellulite reduction, finally there is CelluSmooth™, a long-lasting laser cellulite reduction treatment developed by Sciton®.
What is Cellusmooth™ Technology?
CelluSmooth™ is a minimally invasive laser cellulite reduction treatment performed using M3 technology with the Sciton Joule™ Laser. Using 1320nm wavelength laser pulses, CelluSmooth™ is designed to effectively treat all three components of cellulite using three modes of pulsed laser technology – Burst, Melt, and Tighten.
- The Burst mode uses high-energy laser pulses beneath the dermis to ablate tough fibrous bands that create the appearance of dimples and depressions.
- The Melt Mode uses moderate-energy laser pulses to target and melt areas of fat bulging beneath the dermis.
- The Tighten mode uses gentle low-energy laser pulses to thermally stimulate the dermis to tighten through collagen synthesis.
The CelluSmooth™ laser cellulite reduction treatment is performed while the patient is awake, using only local anesthesia (with or without oral sedation). Downtime is minimal with return to regular activity within a couple days. Patients may resume light exercise in 1 week, and heavy exercise in 2-4 weeks. Final results following a CelluSmooth™ reduction treatment is achieved in about 3-6 months.
Candidates for Cellulite Reduction
What to Expect on the Day of Treatment
On the operative day, preoperative photos are obtained both before and after pre-op surgical markings are done to document treatment areas.
During the anesthesia infiltration phase of the treatment, cellulite areas are injected with tumescent local anesthesia fluid containing dilute lidocaine, epinephrine, and bicarbonate to anesthetize the treatment area.
After the Treatment
After the procedure, an absorptive dressing and compression garment is worn for about 1 week, sometimes longer. Bruising can be expected in the treatment area, but pain is generally mild and treated with over-the-counter acetaminophen or with prescription pain pills.
While immediate improvement may be noticeable, final contouring and cellulite reduction results may take three to six months to be achieved.
