What Are the Safest, Most Effective Vein Treatment Methods?

Varicose veins and spider veins occur when the tiny valves regulating blood flow fail to function properly. The result is blood flowing in the wrong direction through the vein, which can cause increased pressure on the vessel walls. Over time, affected veins become enlarged and visibly noticeable beneath the skin.  Their unsightly appearance can lead to a tendency to cover up with clothing, impair social confidence, and even cause discomforting symptoms.

If left untreated, complications from varicose veins can pose worrisome health risks, including blood clots, ankle edema, skin inflammatory changes and skin ulcers. Here, we look at the safest and most effective varicose vein procedures available to patients today.

How to Prevent Varicose Veins with Self-Care

In the early stages of a varicose vein condition, conservative or non-surgical vein treatment options can be effective. The following natural methods can work to alleviate symptoms such as swelling, burning, or itching, and prevent worsening of the vein condition.

  • Lifestyle changes – Weight control and routine exercise contribute to a healthy circulatory system, which lessens the venous pressure on already dilated and enlarged veins. Smoking cessation is encouraged, since toxins in tobacco disrupt circulation and weaken blood vessels, especially in peripheral areas such as the legs.
  • Compression stockings – These specially designed stockings put a pressure gradient on the blood vessels of the legs that favors their natural drainage, thereby preventing blood from pooling in the feet and ankles while encouraging normal venous circulation.
  • Taking a break – Many jobs these days involve sitting or standing for long periods of time, which can lead to swelling of the veins in the legs. It’s important to take a break every so often, elevate the feet, or do some light exercises, of go for a walk to promote healthy blood flow.

Transdermal Laser Therapy

Transdermal laser therapy is a non-invasive, safe method for reducing visible surface veins. Targeted laser energy is delivered externally from and through the skin to heat and shrink the problem veins beneath. To maintain safety, patients are given protective eyewear during the laser treatment. There is usually no downtime with a transdermal laser treatment. Since darker skin tones and recent sun exposure produces melanin pigment that interferes with laser transmission through the skin, this treatment is only suitable for those with fair skin and only if they have not exposed the problem area to the sun or tanning bed for the prior 2-3 weeks.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive method for eliminating varicose veins. Targeted laser energy is delivered through a very thin optical fiber from within the targeted varicose vein causing it to heat, shrink and close up. Unlike transdermal laser therapy which does not require any type of anesthesia to be used during the procedure, the EVLA procedure is usually performed using local anesthesia to completely numb the veins that are targeted for endovenous laser ablation. Additionally, the EVLA procedure is safe and suitable for all skin types. Following an EVLA procedure, you can return to routine activities immediately. Thigh-high graduated compression stockings are routinely worn for a specified period after the EVLA procedure to ensure the best recovery and treatment results.

Injection Sclerotherapy

Injection sclerotherapy is a very safe method for targeting and eliminating unsightly spider veins and reticular veins on the legs. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of an FDA-cleared injectable medication into the targeted veins. This sclerosing medication will cause the veins to shrink up, collapse, and eventually disappear with time. Follow up sclerotherapy sessions are usually needed if there are extensive unsightly surface veins.

The procedure takes about an hour to perform and there is no downtime, although, due to the way sclerotherapy works, it may take weeks to months before the full treatment effects are realized. Injection sclerotherapy is most effective on small to medium-sized veins.
