by Hogue, Roger
In 2005, a year after we started Hogue Vein Institute, I began to experience intermittent pain and swelling in my legs. I was aware of my positive family history for varicose veins. Both my mother and my father had visible bulging leg veins. I didn’t expect that I would inherit their varicose vein condition. While I never had any visible or bulging leg veins, my legs just hurt. After three pregnancies, my varicose vein symptoms progressively worsened.
Fortunately, my husband Dr. Hogue, was able to scan my legs with ultrasound to discover my leg veins were enlarged and functioning improperly. Apparently the valves in my saphenous veins that regulated the direction of blood flow were malfunctioning and allowing blood to flow in an abnormal direction. Blood actually began to accumulate and pool within my leg veins rather than drain, causing them to stretch and dilate. This caused my legs to ache and burn.
Medical grade compression stockings improved my leg vein symptoms when I wore them. It wasn’t until I had an endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) procedure at Hogue Vein Institute to heat shrink and collapse my abnormal saphenous veins that I experienced for the first time what normal legs felt like. In retrospect, I may have been suffering from my varicose veins for decades.
I’m a registered nurse and I work at Hogue Vein Institute. My experience of suffering from varicose veins, then having them treated, has provided me with empathy and a personal insight when caring for my patients. I have definitely gained a better appreciation of the importance of restoring one’s vein health!
